Before john martyn, before u2, gabriel, genesis etc there was the worlds first cd single - it was DIRE STRAITS.this is it. JEWEL CASE, FOLD OUT INSERT.Brothers in arms was the first ever UK CD-single, reported as limited to 200-400 copies. Issued in 1985 to tie in with the world tour (sponsored by Philips Compact Disc) and promote the first Compact Disc players (made by Philips). In 1986, another CD-single of Brothers in arms was released and strictly limited to 200-400 copies, if reports are to be believed.

Both discs are identical, right down to the catalogue number (884 285-2). The only difference between the two is the Philips logo on the front of the CD inlay and the 1986 version is slightly darker pink coloured. The Live in '86 has a coloured logo, and the Live in '85 is simply blue and white. Jewel case.EDIT SEPT 2013 - MY COPY IS NOW FOR SALE, RELUCTANTLY!

I have quite a few MoFi 45 and 33 pressings, so know what to expect. This is without a doubt, the best version of this album I have heard in general terms, though I say this with some reservations. The songs, production and detail are excellent and MoFi have done an excellent job with the source material, to give vinyl that is crisp, punchy and dynamic. However, when compared to other Dire Straits albums, this one clearly betrays its digital heritage on my very revealing system. It has a degree of brittleness, dryness and lacks the natural flow of a pure analogue recording/mastering.

Arms

There is also a kind of digital sheen or veiling, but nothing like as pronounced as I hear on the CD or my original vinyl from the 1980s. There are places where there are too many pops and clicks, despite wet cleaning, but by far the biggest problem is that the styli on both of my high end players, skip during track B1 (Walk of Life) as has been highlighted in the database comments by others. Mine is serial number 015289. Hoping to get a return and replacement. I just got this one for my Collection - a great pressing.

People whinge about surface noise, but-it's Vinyl so you'll never get a super-clean, quiet pressing; that's the nature of the beast. What annoys me is that the reissuers are sort of lazy; this should be a Gatefold, not just the two heavy vinyl shoved in two paper sleeves in one jacket. I've now put the Vinyl outside of these in rice paper sleeves (inside the jacket, keeping original inners) but it's still a pain to get them in and out of the main LP jacket as there's so much stuffed in there. Ah, well, I'm buying Vinyl to play it, not hoard it like a snob collector; the jackets can fall to bits - I don't care - as long as the Vinyl survives, that's fine.
